Not only companies are faced with an increased level of competition. The competition of locations has also increased due to the shift to a knowledge-based society and the ongoing process of globalization. This shift, which is marked by accelerated proceedings in the economical, social and cultural fields, has to lead to a new way of managing cities. Cities of the knowledge-based society are faced with problems, which had no acceptance in plans and methods of the industry based society. Therefore Erlangen AG will demonstrate new ways, in order to get to a strategic handling with chances, risks and insecurities in economical decisions at the location of Erlangen. This strategic handling is connected with the development of a strategic management system. One pillar of that system could be CI. The aim of CI should be to recognize best-practice methods of other locations and to transform them into own strategies. In the end, the process should lead to a sustainable positioning of the city of Erlangen.
